All-Natural Skin Care: How to Make the Switch

All-Natural Skin Care: How to Make the Switch

The Rooted for Good journey in making natural skin care products began with the desire to have healthier products for ourselves and our families. Many are health conscious when it comes to dietary needs, but what about what we are putting on our skin? I want to know what I’m putting IN my body and ON my body. Our skin is actually the largest organ on our body and absorbs up to 60% of what we put onto its surface.

A lot of unnatural ingredients found in popular skin care products can cause or worsen skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. Even more frightening is the fact that some ingredients have been linked to cancer and could possibly even disrupt the endocrine system affecting us in all sorts of ways including fertility.

So the question becomes, how do you decipher between what’s good and what’s harmful? Knowing if you’re choosing the right product can be overwhelming. You want to make the right choice, but don’t have the time to google every ingredient on a label while standing in the store trying to figure out what’s what. We get it. The top rule of thumb is to use products that only use natural ingredients. You should be able to pronounce everything on the label.

What are the top offenders when it comes to harmful ingredients?

There are numerous ingredients that are harmful to our systems via skin care products of all varieties.

1. Parabens

  • One ingredient to avoid in your skin care regimen is parabens. Parabens come in the guise of many names and you most likely won’t find “Paraben” as a listed ingredient.
  • he most common prefix names for parabens are Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl and Propyl. What’s even more concerning is that since the FDA does not regulate skin care products sometimes these ingredients aren’t even labeled. Parabens are, however, found in most skin care products and deodorants.

2. Polyethylene Glycol

  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is also found in a large majority of popular skin care products especially face washes and lotions. It’s added to these products for its thickening properties. However, while working to synthetically make these products creamy it’s also known for altering and reducing the skin’s natural moisture factor. Yep, you read that right. You may be using a facial moisturizer that also contains ingredients known for degrading your skin’s natural moisture. Talk about creating a repeat customer. One ingredient adds moisture while another is stripping it away. No wonder I spent years trying to find something that would work for my skin’s dry spots. I was creating dry spots as I was “treating” them.

3. Phthalate

  • Another very common potentially harmful ingredient is Phthalate. So, guess what this one does! This is a “plasticizer.” This one is also commonly not listed under the ingredients section or will be listed simply as fragrance. It’s added to many shampoos, lotions and face washes because it aids in homogenizing formulas and helps oils bind more cohesively to other ingredients in the products.
  • They’re not just useful in skin care products either. They’re more commonly found being used on PVC pipe, vinyl flooring and other plastic products. If it works on PVC pipe, it must be good for our skin too, right? No! While it’s working its synthetic magic helping synthetic fragrances bind better to synthetic moisturizers, it is absorbed through our skin and enters our bodies where phthalates have been proven to cause kidney, liver and endocrine system damage. I know it seems unbelievable that we can be sold products to put on our bodies and it’s generally accepted as normal, but it’s happening. Just go look at the labels on the products you currently use and see what you find.

Because the skin care product industry isn’t strictly regulated, the burden of the decision of good versus bad falls on the consumer. We have to ask questions, look at labels and make the best informed decision we can. Well, we’ve taken the endless research off your hands and have created recipes using only natural ingredients that have proven skin and overall health benefits. Most synthetic ingredients simply aren’t good for our systems. Mother nature gives us everything we need, we just have to know what and how to use them.
