New to essential oils? You’re not alone!

We know it can feel a little overwhelming at first, so we’ve put together answers to common questions along with simple, everyday ways to start using essential oils with confidence.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts known for their natural healing, soothing, & aromatic properties. Each oil carries the essence of its source—whether it’s calming Lavender, invigorating Peppermint, or balancing Frankincense.

How are essential oils made?

Essential oils are extracted from plants—like flowers, leaves, bark, or roots—using methods that capture their natural aromatic compounds. The two most common methods are:

  • Steam Distillation: Steam passes through the plant material, causing the essential oil to release. The steam & oil are then cooled & separated, leaving behind pure essential oil.
  • Cold Pressed (citrus oils): Oils are mechanically pressed from the rind or peel without using heat, preserving their fresh, zesty aroma.

The result? A powerful, concentrated oil that carries the natural scent & benefits of the original plant.

How do I use them topically & aromatically?

Topical Application: Dilute 1 drop of essential oil with 1 drop of carrier oil & apply to desired areas as needed. Always dilute appropriately when applying to children. Note: Citrus oils may cause photosensitivity - avoid prolonged sun exposure after application.

Aromatic Use: Diffuse 4–5 drops for up to 1 hour, up to 3 times daily. Enjoy the uplifting & purifying benefits of essential oils as they refresh your space & support overall well-being.

What is a carrier oil & why do I need one?

Carrier oils are natural, plant-based oils—like jojoba, coconut, sweet almond, or olive oil—used to dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin.

Since essential oils are highly concentrated, applying them undiluted can irritate the skin. Carrier oils help:

  • Safely deliver essential oils to your skin
  • Reduce sensitivity or allergic reactions
  • Slow absorption for longer-lasting benefits

Think of carrier oils as a gentle base that makes essential oil use safe, soothing, & skin-friendly.

Can your essential oils be taken internally?

No, we never recommend ingesting essential oils. They are extremely concentrated & can irritate or disrupt your digestive system & microbiome. For safe use, we suggest applying them topically (when properly diluted) or enjoying them aromatically through diffusers or inhalation.

Can I Use Essential Oils Around Kids or Pets?

Yes—but with extra care & proper dilution. Not all essential oils are safe for children or animals, & some can be harmful if used incorrectly.

For Kids:

  • Always dilute more heavily
  • Avoid strong oils like Peppermint, Eucalyptus, & Cinnamon on or near young children
  • Stick to gentler oils like Lavender or Frankincense
  • Never apply near the face or allow kids to handle undiluted oils

For Pets:

  • Animals, especially cats & dogs, are more sensitive to essential oils
  • Avoid diffusing oils in enclosed spaces where your pet can’t leave
  • Never apply essential oils directly to your pet’s skin or fur
  • Some oils are toxic to pets—Tea Tree, Citrus, Clove, & Peppermint are common ones to avoid
  • Consult a vet trained in aromatherapy before using oils with your animals

When in doubt, less is more.

Are essential oils safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Essential oils can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding—but with extra caution & only under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

During Pregnancy:

  • Stick to gentle oils like Lavender, Chamomile, Frankincense, &Citrus oils
  • Avoid oils known to stimulate the uterus or cause contractions (e.g. Clary Sage, Cinnamon, Rosemary, Wintergreen)
  • Always use proper dilution (typically 1% or less) &avoid applying near the abdomen in the first trimester
  • Diffusing is generally considered safer than topical use

While Breastfeeding:

  • Use only mild, baby-safe oils
  • Avoid applying oils directly to the chest where the baby may come into contact
  • Monitor for any skin reactions or sensitivity in both mom & baby

As with all things during this season, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider—especially if you have any medical conditions or are taking medications.

What does Therapeutic Grade mean?

"Therapeutic Grade" refers to essential oils that are pure, unadulterated, & sourced with care. While it's not a regulated term, high-quality therapeutic oils are typically:

  • Steam distilled or cold-pressed without chemicals
  • Free from additives, fillers, or synthetic ingredients
  • Sourced from plants grown in their natural habitat
  • Third-party tested for purity and potency

At Rooted, we use only premium essential oils that meet these high standards to ensure safe, effective use.

How should I store my essential oils?

To keep your essential oils safe, fresh & effective, proper storage is key. Follow these simple tips:

  • Keep them out of reach of children.
  • Keep them in a cool, dark place. Light & heat can break down the oils over time. A cabinet or drawer away from sunlight is ideal.
  • Use dark glass bottles. Most oils come in amber or cobalt blue bottles for a reason—they help block UV light & preserve potency.
  • Tightly seal the caps. Exposure to air can cause oxidation & reduce shelf life. Always screw caps on firmly after each use.
  • Store them upright. This helps prevent leaks & keeps the oils from degrading rubber droppers or lids.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures. Don't store oils near stoves, heaters, or in your car.

With the right care, most essential oils can last 1–3 years—or even longer!
