Should You Wash Your Face Morning and Night?
Whether or not we think we always have time, I think it’s safe to say we ALL love the way it feels after we give our face a good washing. But the question is, when is a better time to wash it - at night or in the morning?
The truth is, research is actually showing that it’s better for your face to wash it TWICE a day: both at morning AND at night!
Why Twice a Day? Isn’t Once Enough?
When it comes to washing your face and when to do it, some times of day seem obvious to us. At night, we have all the build up from the day on our face - dirt, our own oils, makeup, etc. I know I want to get all that off before sleeping, don’t you?
A nightly washing is clearly beneficial to clean the day’s grime and access oil away before bed. But let’s admit it, it’s also super relaxing before sleeping too!
Turns out there’s ALSO a benefit to washing first thing in the morning! Sure, your face hasn’t had to face the dirty world yet, but there’s some other thoughts to consider. Rachel Nazarian, M.D., a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York says, “While you’re tossing and turning at night, bacteria from your saliva and oils from your hair are easily transferred to your face and eyes.”1
Essentially, even if we wash our pillow cases regularly, we still have had our faces up against them all night, which means they (both our faces and the pillow cases!) could do with a wash. I also find that a facewash first thing in the morning is EXACTLY what I need to wake me up and get me feeling ready for the day.
But Isn’t Double Washing Overkill for Dry Skin?
It’s a valid question that needs to be asked - what about those of us (hi, there!) with dry skin? Isn’t a double washing going to turn our faces into sandpaper?!
Well, it could - but it doesn’t have to. While many people think longer is better, it’s actually more beneficial to keep your morning/night face washing routine to a limit of 20-30 seconds. Any longer, especially with exfoliating products, can cause your
skin to get irritated and dry out. A quick wash is really all that’s necessary.
The quality of the product also matters - and you know at Rooted for Good, we are committed to THAT! A truly GOOD face wash shouldn’t be drying your face out. There’s also a chance you might need to add additional oils to your face after washing if your skin has a particular tendency to dry out - not bad oils, good ones!
Why Rooted Products Might Help - My Routine
As you know since you’re here (and if you don’t, welcome!), our Rooted for Good face wash is made from natural ingredients and is gentle on your skin, helping to replenish your skin’s natural oils, so you can wash twice a day without drying out your skin.
We have two types of our Revive face wash - one for normal skin types and one with a Blue Tansy Upgrade to help those of us with more sensitive skin or acne flare ups.
In conclusion, let me describe my personal routine with these Rooted Products, as I am someone with a mixed skin type - (upper cheek and nose region is always dry but jawline is prone to oil and breakouts). I’ll show you how manageable it is!
Morning Routine: I lather a few pumps of the Blue Tansy Upgrade Face Wash on, rinse, and pat dry. Since certain regions of my face get too dry, I then apply quite a few sprays of the Refresh Facial Toner.
Lastly, I roll on the Rewind Face and Eye Serum - my holy grail for acne - directly to my jawline. 30 seconds tops and DONE! My face is clean AND armored for the day ahead.
Night Routine: I do basically the same thing at night, except I add an extra product. Targeting just the regions that tend to get dry, I apply a tiny bit of Renew Face and Body Cream. This product goes on a little heavier, so I like it a lot as a nightly product.
